Assistant Camp Director Job Description
Lincoln Day Camp offers children ages 4-12 a local opportunity to explore woods and meadows, play group games, engage in arts and crafts, and splash in the river. It’s a relaxed summer camp that goes back to the basics of kids enjoying the outdoors! We serve around 40 kids a week. Our camps run for 6 weeks from 8:30am to 4:00pm and are located at the center of Lincoln, Vermont.
We are looking for an Assistant Camp Director who is an experienced and dedicated individual with a wealth of knowledge working with children outdoors. In addition to supporting the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director manages one of the two camp cohorts, overseeing activities, staffing and safety. This individual will also work directly with children to provide a unique, energized, and positive environment at summer camp to create a memorable and safe experience for all kids!
Responsibilities
As Assistant Camp Director, you will report to, and directly support, the Camp Director. Additionally, you will manage one of two camp cohorts (ages 4-6 or 7-12) . As the Assistant Camp Director, you can expect to:
Dedicate some time during the off-season to coordinate camp logistics with the Director
Help run pre-camp orientation with the team of counselors
Manage a small group of cohort counselors and offer regular feedback to continuously improve staff performance.
Monitor daily camp enrollment and maintain accurate attendance records for staff and campers.
Communicate regularly with the Director to ensure that all program equipment and supplies are ordered, available and properly maintained during the summer.
Maintain and enforce all camp safety rules and policies; recognize, prevent and correct safety hazards; monitor the health and safety of all campers and staff.
Serve as head lifeguard during swimming activities
Act as a key player in problem solving staff/camper issues and parental concerns; be able to identify camper behavior issues and respond with corrective steps.
Arrive before the daily camp start time and hold a post camp debrief with staff from 4:00-4:15.
Promote a supportive, playful and inclusive camp culture.
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate would meet some or all of the following qualifications:
Must pass VT and national criminal background checks and child abuse clearances, and be CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard certified (or willing to become certified).
Possess 2+ years of experience working at a day camp or equivalent experience with kids.
Be able to establish and maintain strong working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents, and caregivers.
Communicate in a timely and professional fashion with parents, caregivers, kids and staff and be able to interpret and understand both written and oral instructions.
Commit to working on an hourly basis during part of the school year to support camp planning efforts and commit to working seven total weeks during the summer.
Additional Details
Pre Summer Camp Expectations: April to end of June – 2 to 4 hours per week supporting pre camp efforts
Camps sessions are the weeks of July 1 (off on the 4th), July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, and August 5. Staff training is June 26-28.
Locations : The field at 34 Gove Hill Rd, Lincoln VT or Lincoln Prek/Lincoln Community School (TBD)
Compensation based on experience. Range: $22-$26/hour.
